Animal Crossing: New Horizons' 2020 updates were good fun during holidays, but the game would greatly benefit from some fresh content in 2021.
Despite the plethora of negative attention Nintendo managed to accumulate towards the end of the year, 2020 was still a good one for the corporation, largely because of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. After a successful release, New Horizons has seen consistent free updates. However, most of these updates simply added holiday-themed items and activities. 2021 is an opportunity for Nintendo to add new content to Animal Crossing that actually changes how players experience the game.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons accidentally took advantage of the pandemic as soon as it started. It has sold better than most Switch games already, and it's easily cemented the franchise as a potentially lucrative IP for Nintendo. But even though New Horizons has been supported with free updates ever since its launch back in March, it still has yet to get genuinely interesting new content.

Most of Animal Crossing‘s updates added various recipes and activities based on the many holidays throughout the year, like Easter and Thanksgiving. But much like Halloween decorations in November, they aged very quickly. There were a few updates that added less time-specific content, such as the ability to swim or visit Dream Islands, but these were simply features from New Leaf that weren't available in New Horizons at launch.
What Nintendo Should Add To Animal Crossing In 2021
If there's anything New Horizons needs in 2021, it's some simple quality-of-life changes. Nintendo already added an option to expand Animal Crossing‘s storage further than initially intended, but one of the more annoying things about the game is the scene that plays when players join each other's islands. It's adorable, but it takes forever, so an option to skip it would make a considerable difference. Additionally, while custom designs help players truly customize their characters and islands to be one of a kind, the limit on their number is very harsh and should be expanded. The ability to access storage from anywhere would also be just as helpful. Finally, it's unlikely Nintendo will do it, but the ability to create multiple islands on a single console would add a significant amount of replay value to New Horizons.
One of the disappointing things about the multiplayer in Animal Crossing is that there isn't that much to do, other than show guests around one's island. A great way to alleviate this would be to add some minigames to fidget with online. People have already made their own Animal Crossing multiplayer games, but integrated ones would be even better. Darts, mini-golf, or even just a simple roulette with prizes could add some fun to both single-player and multiplayer when players need a break from crafting and decorating.

Crossover content would also be an interesting addition, alongside the normal holiday content. Nintendo has already announced Super Mario furniture is coming to the game, so perhaps it will add in the rest of the Nintendo-themed furniture that never made it over from New Leaf, like the Zelda set or Samus' helmet. Animal Crossing: New Horizons What i look up. was a great game for helping people make it through 2020, but these additions could make it even better in 2021.
